division of Loews Cineplex, said, “The CityWalk location is potentially the best location in the country for an Imax theater. The theater will be outfitted with electronic 3-D viewing glasses rather than the polarized glasses, which are used at the California Science Center Imax theater. The state-of-the-art theater will seat roughly 500 people and feature a giant screen approximately 59 feet tall and 81 feet across, not quite as large as the California Science Center Imax theater’s screen, which, at 68 feet tall and 90 feet wide, is among the largest in the country. Larry Kurzweil, senior VP and general manager of Universal Studios CityWalk, said, “We believe that the market for an Imax theater today and the years to come is clearly an emerging trend in the cinemagoing industry.” He added that the Imax theater “is one of the key anchors of our expansion program.” Construction on the theater is expected to begin in mid-1999 with a targeted early 2000 opening, done in conjunction with the modification of the existing multiplex.
The Imax theater will be part of the Universal City Cinema’s 18-screen multiplex, which will also undergo a major renovation. The expansion calls for the addition of several new entertainment, dining and retail venues, including a comedy theater, beer garden and a live interactive theater experience.
The Loews/Universal Imax theater is part of a major expansion plan unveiled by Universal Studios CityWalk.
